“Earth girl” is an empowerment initiative for young girls that also supports their personal development as well as cross culture/international interaction. Girls (or young people in general) have an ability to look at the world, see and feel where things are wrong, where the processes and structures aren’t serving who they should be serving. But these voices are not brought out or given the chance to influence decision making. We see the power of a young girl able to be authentic in her experience and ask questions about what she sees to be flawed in her world. Her questions can shed light on the issues that we should be talking about but somehow overlook. By being supported on a journey to explore the question “What does it mean to be myself and say what I want to say in the world?” She can grow and develop capacities valuable for her own life and for contributing to her community. We have bounced around ideas of some kind of online course or media production process based on this idea, an opportunity for girls to connect with other girls in a different country (Sweden-Canada or for example, Sweden-India), learning how to clarifying their voice, standing in their empowerment, holding space for a peer to do the same, helping their peers draw out what it is that they most want to say – all great personal development work. At the same time the material generated could be used in direct advocacy towards decision makers as well as a really powerful social media “Earth girl” campaign.
