Cobolt is Sutra's AI assistant. Space owners can use Cobolt to analyze engagement, review discussions, generate content, configure spaces, and build entire courses or communities from a brief. Participants can use Cobolt to explore insights about discussions they are part of.
Cobolt is available on desktop only and requires the Cobolt feature to be enabled on your account.
Open Cobolt
Click the bolt icon in the top-right controls (the tooltip reads "Cobolt" on hover).
The Cobolt panel opens on the right side of the screen. You can keep working in Sutra while the panel is open.
Type your question in the Ask Cobolt... field, or click the microphone button to dictate with your voice.
Click + New chat to start a fresh conversation, or open Previous chats to return to an earlier session.
Explore insights
Cobolt can help you understand what is happening in a space:
How people are participating and engaging.
What members are saying in discussion prompts.
Which parts of a course or community may need attention.
How a space is structured and organized.
Cobolt answers from available Sutra data — space structure, member activity, contributions, and engagement — rather than guessing.
When you open Cobolt from within a discussion prompt, scope selector pills appear above the input field. Use these to focus the analysis on This prompt, This page, This course, or the Entire community.
You can also click the Explore insights button that appears inside discussion prompts to open Cobolt with that discussion already in context.
Build with AI
Build Mode is how Cobolt helps you create new spaces from scratch. It walks you through a short interview to define your goals, audience, content type, and structure, then generates the space for you.
Click the Start with AI button on your dashboard to enter Build Mode.
Choose what you want to create (a course, cohort, community, or website) or describe it in your own words.
Answer the interview questions. Each question shapes the build brief that Cobolt uses to generate the space. You can go back to change earlier answers.
Optionally upload source material (a PDF or video) for Cobolt to reference during the build.
When the brief is complete, click Build it to generate the space, or click Add more detail to refine the brief further in conversation.
Cobolt creates the full space structure — pages, prompts, content blocks, and settings — based on your brief.
Approve or reject changes
When Cobolt proposes a change that modifies your space — such as updating space settings, generating content, or building from a brief — it shows an approval card before taking action. The card describes what will change and gives you two options:
This confirmation step applies to write actions like configuring a space, modifying a document layout, or inserting generated content. Read-only actions such as analyzing engagement or reviewing discussions happen immediately without requiring approval.
What Cobolt can do
For space owners, Cobolt provides a full set of capabilities:
Analyze contributions, engagement metrics, and member activity.
Review the structure of a space.
Configure space settings (title, description, colors, privacy, and toggles).
Modify document layout and content.
Generate and insert new content into documents.
Build entire spaces from a brief via Build Mode.
For participants, Cobolt offers a focused experience centered on exploring discussion insights within spaces they belong to.
