Changing the parent space

Learn how to move a sub space to a different parent space or share it across multiple parent spaces in Sutra, including key permissions and settings required.

Spaces can easily be moved to other parent spaces or shared between multiple parent spaces. If the sub space you would like to relocate is empty, it's easier to recreate it in the new place or simply copy & paste the content. If this is a discussion sub space or it has important content that can't be copied then use this feature.

Important: You need to be the manager of all the hierarchy of spaces in order to use this setting. In other words you need to be the manager of the sub space and of all the parent spaces that are involved in this move.

How to change the parent space

Let's take a look at the example. In this program, I'd like to move the Recordings sub space to the Content sub space.

Go inside the sub space you would like to move. In my case I'll click on the Recordings.

Inside the sub space click on the Manage button, select General settings and scroll down to Additional settings. Scroll down to Parent spaces. Here you will see all the chosen parent space you'd like to change.

Opt out of the old parent space and opt-in for the new parent space for this sub space. You can simply start typing the name of the new parent space and you'll see it in the drop-down menu.

Note: The same way you can choose to share the space between several parent spaces - just select several parent spaces in the settings.

Important: If you have several spaces with the same name you need to check the individual slug of the parent space you choose:

And that's all there is to it. Once you opt into the new parent space, your sub space — along with all of its content and discussions — moves across instantly, with nothing lost along the way. You can repeat these steps any time you want to reorganize your spaces, or select several parents at once when you'd like the same sub space to appear in more than one place.
