Your space's design is the first thing people feel when they arrive — before they read a word. The design toolbar is where you shape that feeling: colors, fonts, the cover image at the top, the logo in the corner, and how it all feels around your content. Here's how to make it yours:
Before you start
You must be a manager of the space.
Open the space you want to design.
Cover image uploads and layout settings require Bronze or higher. Logo uploads require Silver or higher. If you're on the Basic (free) plan you'll see an upgrade prompt where these features would otherwise appear.
Open the design toolbar
The design toolbar appears in the space editor. It shows five options: Theme, Font, Cover & Logo, Layout, and Templates. Click any of the first four to open a dropdown panel. Clicking Templates opens a separate modal where you can browse and apply content templates.
When you are editing a registration page, the toolbar shows only four options: Theme, Font, Layout, and Templates. The Cover & Logo option is not available on registration pages.
Customize the theme
Select Theme to choose a predefined color theme or customize individual colors.
Click Customize colors to set colors by category:
Header -- Header background, Header text & links.
Buttons -- Primary button, Primary button text, Secondary button, Secondary button text.
Page -- Background, Text color, Secondary background, Sub-header text, Link color.
Sidebar -- Sidebar background, Sidebar text.
Badges -- Badge background, Badge text.
If you have applied a custom theme, a Reset all colors to default button appears at the bottom of the panel. Click it to restore the original color scheme.
On registration pages, the color categories are different and reflect registration-specific elements. You can also click Import theme from content page to match the main space design.
Set fonts
Select Font to choose fonts for your space.
Heading font -- used for headings throughout the space.
Body font -- used for body text and paragraphs.
Accent font -- used for quote boxes and info boxes. This option is not shown on registration pages.
Click Reset Fonts to restore defaults. Click Apply fonts to all subspaces to update heading, body, and accent fonts for all child spaces.
Add a cover image or logo
Select Cover & Logo to upload or replace the space cover image and logo. This option does not appear on registration pages.
Cover image -- 2400 x 600 recommended. Once a cover image is uploaded, you can toggle Display full width to control how the cover stretches across the page. You can also click Replace to swap the image or Remove to delete it.
Logo -- 360 x 120 recommended. Once a logo is uploaded, you can click Replace or Remove.
Maximum file size for either upload is 5 MB.
Cover image uploads require Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Logo uploads require Silver or Gold. On Basic (free) you'll see an upgrade prompt instead of the upload area.
Adjust the layout
Select Layout to control page display options. Layout settings require Bronze or higher. On Basic (free), toggling a setting shows an upgrade prompt.
The standard layout options are:
Hide sidebar -- Remove the sidebar navigation for visitors.
Hide Sutra header -- Hide the top header bar from non-managers.
Hide cover image -- Hide the cover image at the top of the page. This option only appears when a cover image has been uploaded.
Hide page title -- Remove the title from the top of the page.
Hide breadcrumbs -- Hide the navigation path above the title.
Show space icon -- Show the space icon beside the page title.
Wide page -- Expand content area to fill more of the screen.
Click Apply layout to all subspaces to apply your current layout settings to all child spaces.
Website mode
If Website mode is available on your account, the Layout panel also includes:
Website mode -- Show a clean website view with site navigation for visitors. Turning this on changes the space layout significantly and limits the visible layout options to Website mode, Show spaces in page, Hide Sutra header, and Wide page.
Show spaces in page -- Display child spaces within the page content for visitors. This option only appears when Website mode is enabled.
Registration page layout
When editing a registration page, the Layout panel shows a different set of options:
Sidebar -- Show the sidebar info panel with registration and login options. If you turn the sidebar off, you will need to add your own registration and login buttons to the page content using action buttons.
Wide page width -- Expand the content width on the registration page. This option only appears when the sidebar is turned off.
Troubleshooting
Cover image or logo upload not working -- Make sure your file is under 5 MB and is a supported image format (JPG, PNG, or GIF). If the upload appears to get stuck, try refreshing the page and uploading again.
Custom colors reverting to defaults -- After setting custom colors, wait a moment before navigating away. Color changes save automatically but take a brief moment to persist. If the issue continues, try resetting all colors and reapplying your theme.
Cover image looks cropped or stretched -- Use an image close to the recommended 2400 x 600 dimensions. The cover image editor lets you crop and adjust the image before saving.
What happens next
Design changes save automatically and update the manager's view in real time. Other members and visitors see the updated design when they next load the page. If you apply changes to subspaces, review a few child spaces afterward to confirm the shared style works across different content types.
