Recipient filters let you send a broadcast to a narrower group of people in a space. Use filters when a message should go only to people who match specific properties or conditions.
Before you start
Create or open a draft broadcast.
Choose the main audience for the broadcast before adding filters.
Set up any custom contact or member properties you want to filter by.
Broadcast limits
Each paid plan includes a monthly broadcast allowance - the number of broadcast emails you can send per month, counted one per recipient. Your allowance resets at the start of each billing month.
Bronze - up to 5,000 broadcast emails per month.
Silver - up to 25,000 broadcast emails per month.
Gold - up to 100,000 broadcast emails per month.
The Forever Free plan doesn't include broadcasts - sending is available on Bronze and above. If you need a higher limit, contact support, and see our Membership plans for full details.
Add recipient filters
Open the broadcast composer.
Choose the audience you want to send to.
Turn on Filter recipients.
Click Add condition. If you have many custom properties, you can type in the property selector to search.
Choose a property. Custom properties appear in a Custom Properties group. The Membership group contains Date joined.
Choose an operator. The available operators depend on the property type (see the full list below).
Enter the value for the condition. Some operators like "is set" and "is not set" do not require a value.
Add more conditions if needed. When you have two or more conditions, an All match / Any match toggle appears at the top of the filter panel. Choose All match if recipients must match every condition, or Any match if they can match at least one. With a single condition this toggle is not shown.
The recipient count updates as you edit. A green box shows how many of the total recipients match your filters. This count reflects the standard audience segments you selected (such as active members, pending members, or interested contacts). If you chose individual child spaces or specific users as part of the audience, those are not included in the count.
Operators by property type
Different property types offer different operators:
Text - is, is not, contains, does not contain, is set, is not set
Plain text - contains, does not contain, is set, is not set
Select - is, is not, is set, is not set
Multi-select - contains, does not contain, is set, is not set
Number - equals, greater than, less than, at least, at most
Date - before, after, within last
Location - contains, does not contain, is set, is not set
URL - is, contains, is set, is not set
Phone - is, is set, is not set
The property type is determined by how the custom property was set up. You do not choose the type when building a filter -- Sutra shows the correct operators automatically.
Membership filters and contacts
Membership conditions such as Date joined apply only to members of the space. If your audience includes contacts or interested recipients who are not registered members, membership filters have no effect on them. Those recipients pass through the filter unchanged.
Edit an existing broadcast with filters
When you open an existing broadcast that has saved filter rules, the Filter recipients toggle turns on automatically and the saved conditions load into the filter panel. You can adjust or remove conditions before resending or saving.
Turn filters off
Turn Filter recipients off to send the broadcast to the full selected audience. Toggling the switch off clears the filter rules in the composer. The change takes effect when you save the broadcast or send it. If you toggle the switch back on before saving, the previous rules will already be cleared and you will need to add new conditions.
What happens next
Sutra saves the filter rules on the broadcast and uses them to calculate the final recipient list. Review the recipient count before sending to confirm the audience size is what you expect.
