You can require buyers to agree to your terms before they complete payment. When this is on, the checkout page shows a checkbox — "I agree to the Terms and Conditions" — and the payment button stays disabled until it is ticked. Clicking the link opens your full terms in a popup, so buyers never leave checkout to read them.
This is useful for program agreements, refund and cancellation policies, participation guidelines, and liability waivers.
Requires the Silver plan or above. Terms acceptance is part of Sutra's advanced payment options.
Turn on terms acceptance
Open your space and go to Manage → General settings → Privacy and payment settings.
Make sure the space is set to Paid. Terms acceptance only appears on spaces that charge.
Scroll past your payment plans and guest checkout to Require terms acceptance, then switch it on.
On older spaces that still use the legacy payment setup rather than payment plans, the same control lives under the Terms and conditions section of the extras list, alongside Coupons and Tax collection.
Write your terms
Once the toggle is on, a Full terms content field appears. Click it to open the editor, which has two parts.
Link label — the clickable text that appears after "I agree to the…" on the checkout page. It defaults to "Terms and Conditions", but you can change it to something like "Program Agreement" or "Refund Policy".
Full terms content — the text buyers see when they click that link. This is a rich text editor, so you can use headings, bold text, lists, and links.
Click save when you're done. The change is live immediately for anyone who opens your checkout page.
What buyers see
A checkbox above the payment button reading "I agree to the" followed by your link label.
Clicking the label opens your full terms in a popup on top of the checkout page.
The payment button is disabled until the box is ticked.
The same checkbox appears for guest checkout and for free claims, not only for card payments — so anyone gaining access has to agree.
Troubleshooting
The toggle opens an upgrade message instead of switching on — terms acceptance is a Silver feature. Upgrade your plan to use it.
You can't find the setting — the space has to be set to Paid in Privacy and payment settings first. On a free or invite-only space there is no checkout page for the terms to appear on.
The checkbox appears but the link opens an empty popup — the toggle is on but no terms content has been saved. Open Full terms content and add your text.
You want a signed agreement, not a checkbox — Sutra records that the buyer ticked the box in order to pay. It does not capture a signature or produce a countersigned document. For that, link out to a dedicated e-signature tool from your terms content.
What's next
Terms acceptance sits alongside the other checkout controls. Review your payment settings to confirm your plans and pricing, set up tax collection if you need to charge VAT or sales tax, and enable guest checkout if you want people to buy before creating an account.
