Canceling a paid-space subscription and keeping someone in the space are not the same thing. This distinction matters when a member wants to leave completely versus when you want to stop future charges but let them keep access.
Before you start
This article is about member payments for a paid space, not your Sutra account subscription.
Members manage their own paid-space subscriptions from their account settings.
Space managers can stop charging a member from the space's member controls.
If a member cancels their own subscription
A member can go to Settings -> Space subscriptions, open the subscription menu, and choose Cancel subscription.
This cancellation flow also leaves the space. The member loses access immediately because the action removes their membership and cancels the connected Stripe subscription.
If a manager stops charging
A space manager can open the member's row in the space settings and choose Stop charging when the member has an active subscription.
This stops the Stripe subscription and marks the local billing records as canceled, but keeps the person in the space. Use this when someone should no longer be billed but should continue to participate.
Which option should you use?
Use Cancel subscription when the member is leaving the paid space.
Use Stop charging when the member should stay in the space without future subscription charges.
If the member also needs a refund, handle that separately. Canceling or stopping charges does not automatically refund earlier payments.
What happens next
After cancellation or stop charging, future subscription charges stop. Historical payment records remain for accounting, reporting, and support.
Troubleshooting
If someone canceled and lost access, check whether they used the member self-serve cancellation flow.
If someone should keep access, a manager should use Stop charging instead of asking the member to cancel from their own settings.
If Stripe already says the subscription is canceled, Sutra may use that response to reconcile local status.
If the member was removed after a failed renewal, they may need to update payment details and be re-invited.
