The Checkout abandoned trigger sends follow-up emails to someone who entered their email address at checkout but never completed their purchase. Use it when your space sells a paid plan and you want a second chance to bring people back to the registration they started.
Before you start
Your account needs the Gold plan or higher.
The space needs at least one active paid payment option. Without one, the trigger can't be created.
Your email sender needs to be set up for the space, the same setup broadcasts use.
Each space can have one checkout recovery automation. You can't add a second one.
Set up the automation
Go to your space settings and open the Automation tab.
Select Add trigger, then choose Checkout abandoned.
Add your steps. Checkout recovery supports two actions only: Wait and Send email.
Add a Wait step first if you want a delay before the first reminder. Waits are set in hours, and the waits in the sequence must total less than 30 days.
Add a Send email step. Sutra creates a starter draft for you with a subject line, a short message, and a Continue registration button already in place.
Open the email and edit it. Personalization is limited to three tokens: first name, program name, and the resume checkout URL. The email must keep its Continue registration link, or the automation won't activate.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each additional reminder.
Turn the automation on with the Active toggle.
What happens when you activate
Sutra checks the whole sequence before letting you switch the automation on. You'll see an error if any of these aren't true:
At least one recovery email is added and saved.
Every enabled email still contains its Continue registration link.
Every email uses its own draft. Two steps can't share the same email — duplicate the email instead.
All wait steps total less than 30 days.
Your email sender setup is finished.
What happens next
A checkout counts as abandoned 30 minutes after the person last did anything in checkout, as long as they gave an email address. The sequence then starts from the first step.
Only checkouts abandoned after you activate the automation are picked up. Turning the automation off cancels any reminders still queued.
When someone clicks Continue registration, they land back in checkout with their earlier selection — plan, coupon, and pay-what-you-can amount — already restored. The link doesn't log them in.
The sequence stops on its own when:
The person completes their purchase.
They unsubscribe, or their address is suppressed.
They change to a different email address at checkout.
The space is no longer active, or you disable the automation.
30 days pass since the checkout was first identified.
Checkout contact data is removed after 90 days. Outcome records are kept so reporting still works.
Limits to know
Only Wait and Send email steps are available. There's no branching, no conditions, and no other actions.
Emails always go to the checkout buyer. You can't change the recipient.
One checkout recovery automation per space.
