Sometimes you want to ask a few questions before someone enters a space: an intake form, application, waiver, or simple orientation check. A registration survey lets you place that moment directly in the join flow, so new members answer the survey before they become active in the space.
Before you start
You need manager access to the space.
Create the survey first, unless you plan to create it while adding the registration step. For the full survey builder, see Create and share a survey or quiz.
This article only covers using a survey during registration. It does not cover standalone survey links, page survey blocks, quiz scoring, or response exports.
Add the survey step
Open the program space where people register.
Choose Manage from the top menu, then open the Automation section.
Select a new one and then Add step.
Choose Survey person on join from the step menu.
Choose the survey you want registrants to complete. You can select an existing survey or create a new one. Save the step.
What registrants experience
When someone registers, Sutra creates their membership and routes them to the survey before they enter the space. After they submit the survey, they continue into the space as an active member.
If they stop before submitting, they may remain in a pending registration-survey state. You can follow up with them, let them complete the survey later, or manually approve them if you want to let them in without the survey response.
Manage people who have not completed it
Open the space's people area.
Look for people who are pending because the registration survey is not complete.
Choose whether to remind them, leave them pending, or approve them manually.
If you approve someone manually, they can enter the space without completing the registration survey. To collect the response afterward, add the same survey to a page or share its direct link.
What happens next
The registration survey now runs as part of your join flow. Keep the survey itself updated from Manage > Surveys, and review responses from the survey's response view rather than from the registration settings.
Troubleshooting
You do not see Survey person on join: Make sure you are editing the registration automation for the program space and have selected Add step first.
A person registered but is not active: They probably have not submitted the registration survey yet. Check their member status, then follow up or approve them manually.
People joined without answering: Manual approval lets someone bypass the survey. If you still need their answers, share the survey link or place the survey on a page inside the space.
You need to edit questions or see responses: Go to Manage > Surveys. Registration settings only decide when the survey appears in the join flow.
